    Although Asian Monsoon (AM) is a regional phenomenon, it exerts a significant impact on the global climate. Since uplift of Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau (HTP) has been considered as playing a significant role on the establishment of AM, numerous attempts have been made to test the linkage between the HTP uplift and AM evolution. On the other hand, comparison of AM evolution with global climate and pCO2 during Cenozoic suggests that AM evolution is significantly affected by global climate and pCO2. Thus, importance of the HTP uplift on AM evolution is questioned. However, the effects of the HTP uplift and AM precipitation on chemical weathering, erosion, and CO2 uptake could be acting as feedbacks on AM-HTP uplift linkage, thus importance of HTP uplift on AM evolution is still an open question.

    From 2013 to 2016, IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program and International Ocean Discovery Program) conducted a series of expeditions that are related to AM evolution and its interaction with climate system in Northwest Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, and exciting results are coming out. Therefore it is timely to gather and synthesize the results of these cruises to promote our understanding of AM evolution, variability, their controlling factors, and their interaction with HTP uplift and/or Cenozoic global cooling. Here we call for reviews and research articles that summarize recent findings as well as data papers that present useful meta data based on the data obtained during IODP expeditions related to these topics.

    The Asian monsoon system is one of the most complicated weather and climate systems in the world, involving interactions between land, ocean, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, with the impact of the biosphere becoming more involved as a result of various human activities. A number of recent research programmes have been devoted to understanding this complex monsoon system, for example the Monsoon Asian Hydro-Atmosphere Scientific Research and Prediction Initiative (MAHASRI), and the Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007–2012) in the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), and these efforts have done much to advance our understanding of the Asian monsoon hydroclimate.

    In this SPEPS article collection we invite authors to contribute innovative research or reviews on the Asian monsoon hydroclimate. The general scientific areas that we are interested in are (i) monsoon variability and changes in diurnal, intra-seasonal, seasonal, inter-annual and multi-decadal time-scales; and (ii) past and future climate changes, their impact and adaptation. Both observation and modeling studies are welcome.

    4. High-definition topographic and geophysical data in geosciences

    Recent technological developments in high-definition, or high-resolution data collection of earth surface topography and geophysical properties have led to advances in measuring earth surface processes and dynamics. Accordingly, the theory, acquisition, processing, modeling and analysis of such high-definition data are progressing rapidly. Furthermore, there is increasing demand for well-documented datasets and open-source tools, which are crucial for further advances in geoscience and the instrumentation. With such advances, numerous solutions will be provided for issues in human geosciences, such as geomorphological or hydrological responses to environmental changes, tectonic or volcanic surface and subsurface deformations, submarine morphology and ecology, conservations for archaeological and cultural heritages, and more effective disaster controls.

    In this special issue SPEPS, we invite authors to contribute innovative research or reviews on high-definition topographic and geophysical data. A suitable contribution would consider both the technical issues and geoscientific applications of high-definition topographic and geophysical data. The approaches may include, but are not limited to, laser scanning, SfM-MVS (structure-from-motion multi-view stereo) photogrammetry, GNSS (global navigation satellite system) positioning, SAR (synthetic aperture radar) interferometry, multi-beam sonar, geomagnetic and electromagnetic sensors, based on terrestrial (fixed or mobile), instrumentation or survey watercraft (unmanned or manned), submersible vehicles (unmanned underwater vehicle or manned), and aerial (unmanned or manned airborne) platforms.
